- I was responsible for the production, camera work and documentation of a live stream walking through the garden at Sōseiji, a Sōtō Zen temple in Odawara, broadcast on November 3, 2026 on the official YouTube channel of the Kanagawa Branch of The Garden Society of Japan. The stream was organized by The Garden Society of Japan, led by its Technical Committee, and co-organized by the Kanagawa Branch. Since 2016, the branch has been building a garden at Sōseiji using traditional Japanese techniques through a series of workshops. In the stream, three past and present heads of the branch walked the site and explained the stone walls, bamboo fences, stone path, tsukubai, koshikake machiai, dry-stone arch, tataki and kawara-dobei built in those workshops: Tetsuya Shimizu (Odawara Zouen; Chair of the Technical Committee, The Garden Society of Japan; former head of the Kanagawa Branch), Takumi Yoneyama (previous head of the Kanagawa Branch) and Kazuki Sakurai (Niwayoshi; current head of the Kanagawa Branch). Tetsuya Shimizu and I planned and structured the stream together. At the end, it announced the sanzon-ishigumi workshop planned for April 2027.

[Documentarian's Perspective]
When the stream began and three people who have led the branch stood side by side, I realized once again how large and how long-running this workshop project at Sōseiji is. This stream was possible only thanks to the understanding of Sōseiji, to Tetsuya Shimizu, who built that relationship over the years, and to the efforts of the branch members and participants who have kept expanding the garden. I felt that weight throughout the broadcast.
Before getting to what I worked on, I should note that I ran test after test to make sure the stream could make it to the end under tough conditions. Streaming on my own (though in the end Daisuke Kotani and Kotaro Mori helped me, which made things much easier) meant the only equipment was a smartphone, which serves as both camera and connection. But there were many speakers, so I had to connect several wireless microphones. The microphone receiver occupies the smartphone's port, so the phone cannot be charged during the stream. Would the battery last? Would the phone overheat? Would the wireless microphones work? I tested these basics again and again before the day. And once the stream started, the branch heads were not professional speakers. I let them talk as freely as possible and kept to the basic rule of having the camera follow them.
After the stream, I understood that these ten years matter deeply to the branch, its members and the participants. Many of the workshops invited master gardeners regarded as legends, and they have become places where people raise people and work raises people. I think the passion of the branch heads who shaped the workshops that way came through. My heartfelt thanks to everyone for making this such a wonderful stream.
