- Outline

- I was responsible for the videography, editing and documentation of a compilation video of the "kawara-dobei with Kanto clay" workshop series, held from September 2020 to May 2022 by the Kanagawa Branch of The Garden Society of Japan at Sōseiji, a Sōtō Zen temple in Odawara. Under the guidance of Koji Osada (Osada Sakan Kogyo), participants built a kawara-dobei earthen wall from clay and roof tiles. The video condenses about two years of work, from preparation and mixing the earth to laying the base, stacking tiles and clay, and finishing the roof, into 13 minutes. Since 2016, the branch has been building a garden at Sōseiji using traditional Japanese techniques, holding one or two workshops a year. This video is one record of that project.
[Documentarian's Perspective]
An earthen wall 50 meters long is overwhelming from the start. First come the materials: huge amounts of clay and roof tiles. Then come the many gardeners who work with them, spread out along the wall. The gardeners at the 10-, 20-, 30- and 40-meter marks are different people, and each moves at a different pace and works in a different way. I felt that this is one of the charms of a workshop.
So what I aimed for in shooting and editing was to convey the potential a workshop holds. A project of this scale can be taken on by many people, each with their own perspective and skills. That is possible because it is a workshop, not a commercial job. I shot and edited so that the ingenuity and passion at each point along the wall would come through.
