Outline

Solutions
I was responsible for the videography, editing and documentation of a workshop held on September 28 to 29, 2019 by the Kanagawa Branch of The Garden Society of Japan at Sōseiji, a Zen temple in Odawara. Under the guidance of Shigeharu Kanetsuna (Kanetsuna Zouen Jimusyo), well known for creating tea gardens (roji), and with the support of his son Junichi Kanetsuna, participants learned how to make a roji by building tobiishi (stepping stones), a tsukubai (a low stone water basin arrangement) and a tsukiyama (an artificial hill). The tsukubai and stepping stones set here led on to the branch's 2024 workshop on the koshikake machiai waiting bench and the agesudo gate. Since 2016, the branch has been building a garden at Sōseiji using traditional Japanese techniques, holding one or two workshops a year. This video is one record of that project.

[Documentarian's Perspective]
Many participants came from outside Kanagawa, which reminded me how popular Kanetsuna is. The stepping stones were laid along a downward-sloping garden path. How do you make a path that is easy to walk in a kimono and pleasant to the eye? Setting the stepping stones together one by one, in work where rhythm is said to be everything, was a rare experience for the participants.

In shooting and editing, I mostly used angles at human eye level. I knew that low angles and similar shots would look more impressive, but this was not a promotional video. I aimed to convey the atmosphere of the venue and what the workshop was really like.
