- Outline

- I was responsible for the videography, editing and documentation of a tataki and hanchiku workshop, "Exploring the Potential of Earth in the Garden," held on September 23 to 24, 2023 by the Kanagawa Branch of The Garden Society of Japan at Sōseiji, a Sōtō Zen temple in Odawara. Under the guidance of Masato Ochi (Souzouen, Contemporary Master Craftsman), the first landscape gardener from Ehime Prefecture to be named a Contemporary Master Craftsman, participants explored earth as a material: laying tataki in a range of mixes, including ones made with quicklime, finishing the bed of a garden stream, and shaping earthen objects with the hanchiku rammed-earth method. Since 2016, the branch has been building a garden at Sōseiji using traditional Japanese techniques, holding one or two workshops a year. This video is one record of that project.
[Documentarian's Perspective]
To me, Mr. Ochi is a man of ingenuity. Since he was young, he has asked himself again and again how to solve the problem in front of him. It is well known that he devised his own hanchiku mixes and methods. Beyond that, he has brought his ingenuity to everything, from pruning techniques to how many hours a job takes, and created his own way of working. The theme of this workshop, exploring the potential of earth, is where he is at his best. When I talked with him, he told me, "When I was young I had no money, but I didn't give up. I kept thinking about how to make do with only what I had." And in a world where holding back always seems to win, he is a very human person who values joy, anger, sorrow and delight.
What I aimed for in shooting and editing was to record a workshop that held two qualities that usually pull against each other: the surprises Mr. Ochi springs on participants, and his logic. Smoke rises, mud gets thrown, a planter is made with hanchiku. I shot and edited so that viewers can see the work moving back and forth between experiment and construction.
