Outline

Issue No. 265 of NIWA marks the magazine's 50th anniversary with a major feature, "The Current Landscape of Japanese Gardens." For it, I sat down with Sadao Yasumoro of Yasumoro Teien — a legend among Japanese gardeners — and Hajime Atarashi of Soen, who says Yasumoro's work shaped his own. We talked about Yasumoro's early years and his time as a mid-career gardener, and about where garden-making goes from here. The phrase in the title — "drift more" — is Yasumoro's own. Today's world is so fixed on efficiency that people can no longer move without a clear purpose, and that leaves little room for the unexpected. A gardener works with all of creation. Only by living through a great deal of what you never planned for, Yasumoro argues, can you make it through the next fifty years.
