- Outline

- Issue No. 265 of NIWA marks the magazine's 50th anniversary with a major feature, "The Current Landscape of Japanese Gardens." One of its columns turns to two people who are advancing the garden world from somewhere other than garden-making itself. The first is Masatoshi Ito, the person behind the garden information site Oniwasan. He says he began knowing next to nothing, and he talked about what came into view once he had compiled data on more than 2,000 gardens. The second is Takaaki Matsunaga of Japanese Garden TV, with over 200,000 followers, who says he is at the enjoyable stage of coming to understand what makes old gardens good. That feeling led to a project to 3D-scan old gardens so their condition is recorded accurately, and from there to founding the Japanese Garden Archive Association. What is it that drives each of them?
