- The official website of Yoshitoshi Mori (1898–1992), who pioneered kappa-ban, a form of print made with the kappazuri stencil technique, was renewed in October 2026. The previous official website, moriatelier.com, was created in 2014 by his eldest daughter, Eiko Mori. Because I had helped with that work, I was entrusted with this renewal under Ayako Takahashi, the holder of the copyright in his works. Rebuilding the site twelve years on called for a design suited to the present day, one that is clear and easy to view, so that Yoshitoshi Mori's works can be preserved as an archive for future generations. It also had to protect the dignity and refinement of the artist while letting the appeal of his prints come through. An English version was added so that collectors in Japan and abroad can come to know his work, and the site moved to a new address, moriyoshitoshi.org, to make it more clearly a site devoted to the archive.
The site runs to 26 pages in Japanese and English. Building on the original texts while re-checking the facts against the exhibition catalogue, the initial launch presents 15 representative works, 42 collections in Japan and abroad, a bibliography, a glossary of 41 kappazuri terms and a chronology. The pages have a white ground in the manner of a museum catalogue, and no work is cropped.
We plan to increase the number of works listed in the future.
(This site was created on a volunteer basis, out of respect for my ties with Yoshitoshi Mori's eldest daughter, Eiko Mori, and with the gardeners who first connected me with her.)
